Design Resilience is an open-access platform enabling and encouraging the building sector to exceed “code minimum” level performance.
The platform is an authoritative source of recognised non-regulatory design and construction documents, and a valuable source of information for designers and practitioners. This is a joint undertaking between Natural Hazards Commission Toka Tū Ake, the Ministry of Business, Innovation & Employment, BRANZ, and the technical societies (NZGS, NZSEE, SESOC). Each organisation has a representative that sits on an Advisory Group which oversees this platform.
This platform will release and incorporate additional documents over time. If you or your organisation has or knows of a resource that fits the criteria of this platform, feel free to get in touch.
Design Resilience NZ is overseen by an Advisory Group.
It consists of a representative from each of the partner organisations and helps to guide the platform. The representatives contribute their technical expertise to assess the validity of proposed resources, identify gaps and opportunities for the platform to expand, and connect with their respective organisations on the impact this platform has.

This platform is a shared undertaking between multiple organisations who collectively work towards better outcomes in the built environment to better serve the needs and aspirations of New Zealanders.
The Natural Hazards Commission Toka Tū Ake provides support and financial assistance to New Zealanders after natural hazards events, and is committed to reducing the impact of natural hazards on people, property, and communities.
The Building System Performance branch of the Ministry of Business, Innovation, and Employment is responsible for managing New Zealand building laws and regulations that protect public safety and property.
BRANZ uses independent research, systems knowledge and its broad networks to identify practical solutions that improve New Zealand’s building system performance.
The New Zealand Geotechnical Society (NZGS) is the affiliated organisation in New Zealand of the International Societies representing practitioners in soil mechanics, rock mechanics, and engineering geology.
The New Zealand Society for Earthquake Engineering (NZSEE) gathers, shapes, and applies knowledge to reduce the impact of earthquakes on our communities. It is the premier organisation representing earthquake engineering practitioners.
The Structural Engineering Society (SESOC) is the New Zealand professional body for the structural engineering profession. It promotes the practice of structural engineering and supports practitioners.
The resources that are presented on this platform are selected by the Advisory Group, and must balance a variety of criteria.
Firstly, this platform specifically shares non-regulatory resources, as there are already well-established and well-defined sources of regulatory information elsewhere. Additionally, the resources available here have been agreed to be of sufficiently wide use and benefit to the building sector, and to have rigorous technical or empirical foundations.
