Code of Practice for the Seismic Performance of Non-Structural Elements

Design Guidance
The Code of Practice for the Seismic Performance of Non-Structural Elements (NSE CoP) provides guidance on the minimum acceptable standards for non-structural seismic design, coordination, selection, and construction. It provides the clarification and guidance needed to improve the industry’s confidence that non-structural elements will achieve the expected seismic performance in the future. It also provides guidance on how to design and construct systems that perform better than code minimum.

The NSE CoP provides information for all parties involved in building design and construction, including the building owner, architect, structural engineer, building services engineer, contractors, sub-contractors and trades. Its purpose is to provide a common language across the industry to define and specify what is meant by seismic performance. This goes beyond seismic restraint to include the impact of seismic on other performance factors such as acoustic, weathertightness and fire performance, etc.

This is Phase 1 of the NSE CoP. Phase 2 aims to publish an update in early 2026.
